Registration to the Cyber Security Rumble is now opened to students in Germany

Who’s the best at cracking cyber security puzzles? Students from all over Germany can register for the Cyber Security Rumble Germany, which is taking place for the first time at the University of Bonn. On the 13th & 14th of March 2019, an online preliminary challenge round will take place allowing teams, of up to four people, to qualify for the finals event. The finals will take place on the 29th & 30th of March in the new computer science lectures hall at the Poppelsdorf Campus of the University of Bonn.

NVISO and a team led by computer science professor Dr. Matthew Smith, from the University of Bonn, are organizing the first German Cyber Security Rumble event in co-operation with the SANS Institute. NVISO has been running the Cyber Security Challenge for the last 5 years in Belgium.

We are now trying to set up a similar showdown for the best students in the field of cyber security in Germany and, if possible, to top our friends in Belgium.” says Prof. Smith.

Anyone who is enrolled in a University or School of Applied Sciences in Germany and who enjoys tinkering with cyber security can register at www.cybersecurityrumble.de. The best team will win security training from the SANS Institute as well as a trip to the Def Con 27 hacker conference in Las Vegas. Other awards include tickets to the Hack-in-the-Box Security Conferences.

SANS is very proud to be part of Cyber Security Rumble. Initiatives such as these are vital to help uncover the much-needed new talent that is so important to the future of the German cyber security industry. With the worldwide cyber security skills gap continuing to grow, it is critical that both industry, government and educational institutions come together to increase awareness of cyber security as a rewarding career, and to educate and inspire young people to take their first steps into cyber security.” says Herbert Abben, Director for the DACH region at the SANS Institute

Teams, with a maximum of four participants, will compete against each other to complete security challenges. The challenges will embrace different areas of security, from cryptography to network security, web, and mobile security, to wireless security and forensics. The complexity of the challenges covers a wide range, meaning students from every level can compete and support the teams.

The Cyber Security Rumble is an initiative of NVISO and the University of Bonn in collaboration with the SANS Institute. The competition is supported by main sponsors BMW, BNP Paribas and DB Systel in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn, EY and Grohe. The sponsors are eager and excited to raise cyber security awareness and help educate the next generation of security experts.
